Study Argentine Tango in the Phoenix area with David Liu. David, a most creative argentine tango teacher and performer, has taken an unusual path to becoming the artist he is. He has studied body reeducation extensively (Ideokinesis and Feldenkrais) and also rhythm analysis. He has studied modern dance with Marni Woods (former dancer and currently the director of the Martha Graham school) and with Ethel Dias (former dancer and current teacher with the Alvin Ailey Company) and has studied Argentine Tango extensively with Michael Walker and with many world class Argentine performers and instructors (including Milena Plebs).
David brings an intriguing combination of delight, patience, skill and creativity to the teaching of Argentine Tango. He is a rare dance teacher who, in some privates, has created simple exercises for his students in order to help them get the proper tango movement and orientation into their bodies. To the student, the effect of a simple well known movement creating such a difference can feel like magic.
GROUP CLASSES
Sunday in Scottsdale
David is now teaching classes Sunday afternoons at Ambiant Dance which is located at 16597 N. 92nd St., Suite 105, Scottsdale, Az. 85260. That is the SE corner of Bahia and 92nd St., near hwy 101. To get there from hwy 101, exit Frank Lloyd Wright/Bell Rd. Go North on the access road (which is on the east side of hwy 101), past Westworld, East on Bahia Dr, pass 92nd St., and make a Right into the 1st driveway.
There will be 2 classes, each 1 hour and 15 minutes long. The beginning class will run from 2pm to 3:15pm and the intermediate/advanced class will run from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. From 4:30pm to 5pm, there will be time for some extra practice dancing.
The cost of these classes will be $40 for any 4 classes to be used within 8 weeks, $20 for both classes taken in one day and $12 for any single class.
Wednesday in Tempe
David is now teaching Argentine Tango on Wednesday evenings at the Paragon Dance Center, 931 E. Elliot Rd. #101, Tempe, Az. 85284 which is located at the southeast corner of Rural Rd. and Elliot Rd. in Tempe. These classes are 1 hour 15 minutes long.
There will be 2 classes, a beginning class which will run from 6:45pm to 8:00pm and an intermediate/advanced class which will run from 8:00pm to 9:15pm. David will take advantage of the intermediate/advanced class to sometimes teach his own choreography and may also sometimes teach milonga and waltz.
The cost of the classes will be $40 for 4 classes in any month with 4 Wednesdays and $50 for 5 classes in any month with 5 Wednesdays. That's just the way the Paragon has things organized. Any single class will cost $12 per person. Both classes taken on the same day will cost $20.
All of our classes will have a period of dance technique for tango which will be geared toward helping students create more beautiful movement. We do want to encourage our students to take both classes when they come Sunday or Wednesday. Anyone who is already comfortable with basic tango steps can benefit from the first class by studying movement techniques. David is a very analytical teacher who has a deep understanding of what makes movement beautiful. He also has a unique ability to create simple exercises and explanations which transmit this understanding to his students.

SEMI PRIVATES
Semi privates are less expensive than privates but give people a chance to have a great deal more personal attention than they have in a class. Semi privates will be limited to 3 couples and will usually be one two hour session per week. The cost will be $160 per person for 4 two hour sessions. At the end of 4 sessions, you will, in a sense, "own" that time slot and will have a chance to continue.
Please let us know if you are interested in participating in a semi private. We will try to coordinate locations and times so that you can attend. Also, if you don't have a partner, we will help you look around for someone who would be suitable.
PRIVATES
David is currently teaching private lessons to either individuals or couples. He is available to come to your house and he also is currently working with several dance studios and in his own studio which is located in south Scottsdale very near Hwy. 101.
A series of private lessons is a very good way to create a romantic and unusual wedding dance. David can choreograph a special dance for the occasion either to a favorite piece of music or to something you choose from pieces he suggests.
The cost of a private lesson is $80 an hour. Privates usually last for 2 hours. A 2 hour private costs $150.
TANGO INTENSIVE
For people who want to immerse themselves in an intense tango learning experience, we have created a package that combines various kinds of instruction with a personal choreography and a chance to create a video record. This intensive is designed to be completed over a period of one to two months.
The goal of this tango immersion is not only for you to feel comfortable dancing tango in various situations but also for you to have a special dance choreographed especially for your knowlege and abilities which you can use either in a social dancing situation or for a performance.
The price for the entire package is $1800 for one person or a couple or $2400 for three people or two couples.
PRICES
The total tango immersion package costs $1800 for one person or a couple and $2400 for three people or two couples.
David charges $80 an hour for a private lesson. Private lessons usually meet every week and last for 2 hours. The 2 hour private lessons cost $150.
Semi privates meet every week for 2 hours. The cost for 4 two hour sessions is $160 per person. The semi privates are limited to 3 couples and require a commitment of at least 4 sessions.
David's Sunday afternoon group classes currently cost $30 for 4 1 hour classes per person to be used within 8 weeks and $10 for a single 1 hour class per person.
David's Wednesday evening classes cost $40 for 4 1 hour and 15 minute classes in months that have 4 Wednesdays and $50 for 5 classes in months that have 5 Wednesdays. Single classes cost $12 per person and both classes taken on the same day cost $20 per person.
For unusual private, semi private or class situations, we will establish price on a per situation basis.
